Things-to-do during holidays.

27 06 2010

This one is for all those who haven’t really planned their holidays and will just wander around the streets of Mumbai or other cities. The whole world goes to Lonavala, meets friends, goes shopping or waste hours online. But where’s the fun in that?  Right? Here are a few tips that might just be helpful…

  1. Visit your granny’s place. You would love the extra attention they shower upon you.
  2. Learn a new language (French is fun!)
  3. Watch some old Shammi Kapoor movies. You can’t miss the old-world charm, especially in this weather.
  4. Start a band or a dance crew. It’s so easy in the movies…
  5. Brush up your gk and vocab. It always comes in handy.
  6. Stop watching reruns of your favorite serials. Save electricity. Save Earth.
  7. Instead go for a nice long walk in the rains.
  8. Promise to start studying for CAT/GRE (tomorrow…pakka)
  9. Get up at 5 in the morning to revive your dying blog.
  10. Advice all your friends to follow your plan.
  11. End up not following your plan yourself.
  12. Finally listen to your wiser confidants to leave it to your destiny ;)

‘Trip’ped!

26 01 2010

Slightly different from my expectations, with half of my group in the Committee, we still managed to make my very first IV special, obviously with high melodrama! Starting from Mumbai Central in the Golden Temple Mail, our first stop was Ambala Cantt near Chandigarh…

Chandigarh was enchanting with its Rock Garden. We must have clicked a hundred snaps alone there! Poor Pranav had to patiently wait for us girls to finalize every minute detail before clicking a snap! And just to make this spot more memorable, something unusual had to happen. Faza fell with Anna labeling it as the first ‘casualty’ of the trip!

The first day at Manali was completely unpredictable. Morning we fought with the guys, afternoon Riddhi cried, evening we patched up and then we had a blast at the ‘DJ nite’. All in one day!

The next day was better. Did river-crossing for first time in my life and managed to have our own little adventure: 7 of us ventured out to the farthest end of the river. Being all alone and unguided, it was a very liberating experience. Again marked by an auspicious occurrence, (Bhangale’s specs fell in the river!) it was an unforgettable adventure of sorts.

The latter part of the day was spent in fruitful activities like shopping. I mean, there are some things money can’t buy, but for everything else…you can always bargain! I still remember the dumbfounded look on Cavil’s face when I managed to buy the same 90Rs gloves that he had bought, for 55! Later he insisted on me doing his other shopping!

On the third day, we went to the Solang Valley, my first experience of an actual snowfall. At places like these you feel like never going back, that time would stand still, that you could live there forever… For that moment you could forget that you have worldly life to return to. We had a time of our lives up there! Skied, couldn’t stop playing snow fights, slept and rolled on snow and almost had Maggie! We could have actually made an igloo and spend the rest of our lives there, but being a ski instructor isn’t the most lucrative profession nowadays!

Dalhousie was dramatic. The road to Khajjiar was heavenly. Spiraling around the snow-clad mountains with picturesque valleys and frozen waterfalls and singing some old classics in chorus made the journey unforgettable. Chamba Valley was memorable for reasons better left unrevealed ;)

Our return train journey was more entertaining than the previous one. All through the evening, we played back-to-back sessions of Poker, although I was personally reeling under slight fever. Like a ritual of every trip, the next morning saw the likes of toothpaste and shaving cream of all our faces!

As all good things come to an end, we reached Mumbai by 8.30 in the night. This trip did give me the much-needed change that I wanted. But most of all, it has left me with some great memories…

AN ETERNAL OPTIMIST :)

1 01 2010

Finally! After contemplating for many months, I start this brand New Year with my blog on a positive and an inspirational note. As the title suggests, I don’t claim to be one eternally (I am cynical some of the times), but I definitely aim to be one. Now that’s an optimistic thought in itself. I feel that facing each and every event with a positive attitude can certainly make life easier.

Everyone goes through their share of lows in life…even a Tiger! But does it stop them from being who they are or doing what they do best? (No pun intended) An average Indian is believed to be happier than most of his other counterparts. That is evident from the fact that even a tainted minister, convicted on grounds of corruption and transgressions, can still win the state elections or an out-of-form cricketer can still profess his choice of endorsements. It is another fact that this can happen only in India! But it just shows that a positive and determined mind can tide over the testing times fearlessly. And that is exactly what I have learnt in my 2½-year stint at engineering. After every “not-so-good” paper, you always hope that the next one will be easier!

It is the question of whether you see your glass as half-empty or half-full. To reach the pinnacle you have start from the base and traverse across the rocky patches. So why fear failure? Instead, work on your present with passion and then hope for the best. It is the same ‘Darr ke aage jeet hai’ funda. Clichéd as it may sound, luck always favors the brave. It is this perpetually optimistic attitude that I yearn for. However hoping for assignment-free, practical-oriented studying in our education system is an overtly optimistic thought. Not to forget the tormenting species who call themselves the ‘benefactors of knowledge’, in other words, ‘professors’. But we still have our techfests, cultural fests and trips that we look forward to. ;)

A recent product of brilliant and inspirational cinema gives an insight to the world of a hardworking engineering student. It shows us that even if nothing is working in your favor, there is always a door of opportunities just waiting to be opened. Only the key to that door is in your hand! It is the optimism, courage and faith in your own self that needs to be awakened. It is only about time we start realizing our true strength..

To sum it up, I would interpret a song from the same movie ‘3 Idiots’ like an ‘eternal optimist‘…

“Give me some sunshine,
Give me some rain,
I will get another chance,
To grow up the way I say…!”

Wish you all a very Happy and a Positive New Year!!
 Cheers to Life!! :)
